Paid Newsletter Business
Run the arithmetic first, because most newsletters cannot reach the goal they were built for
At a ten dollar price and a five percent conversion rate, which is healthy, a thousand free subscribers produce five hundred dollars a month. Reaching five thousand a month needs ten thousand subscribers, a higher price, or a better conversion rate. Most writers discover this two years in. This system tells them in the first conversation, and names the three levers: list size, conversion rate, and price — the last being the one writers never touch and the one that moves fastest. WEDGE: the only four things that convert free readers to paying ones — information with money attached, time saved, access, and identity. Plus the qualifying question: what does the reader do differently because they read this? If the honest answer is 'nothing, they enjoy it', this is a free product whose model is sponsorship or a back-end offer, and the skill says so rather than helping build a paywall nobody will cross. RHYTHM: why weekly is the standard, why daily is a different business, the four-issue buffer before launching paid, and designing a format you can fill on a bad week — because those weeks are the ones that end most newsletters. WALL: the four paywall models and when each is right, plus the rule that free issues must be good enough to be worth the subscription on their own. Content deliberately weakened to force upgrades destroys the funnel that feeds the paid tier. GROWTH: cross-promotion first, paid acquisition last and only once lifetime value is known. STACK: sponsorship, products from the archive, cohorts and services. The archive is an asset, not a graveyard.
