What The Top Pages Have In Common

You are about to write a page and you still do not know what it has to cover.

SEO & Websites·Intermediate

Staring at a blank page and a search results list is a bad feeling, because you can see that other people already answered this and you cannot tell what they actually said. Guessing usually ends one of two ways: you leave out something every reader expects, or you write a slightly worse copy of somebody else's page. This skill works the other way round. It first throws out the results that are not really your competitors, a forum thread or a general reference entry, then reads the three to five pages that are, and counts what they share as a fraction of the pages actually read. It tallies the topics into must cover, should cover, worth considering, and the one group that matters most, the subjects none of them touched, because matching the established pages only gets you to level. What comes back is a filled in build sheet: a newly written title and description, the section order, the length range the other pages settled on, and a plain list of what could not be checked.

What's Inside

Sorts every result into three buckets, read these, note these, throw these out, before a single page is read
Tallies every topic into must cover, should cover, worth considering, and the subjects none of them covered
Matches sections by subject rather than wording, so three differently worded definitions count as one section, not three
Records each page's title, description, main heading and address ending exactly, then names the pattern across the whole set
Checks the hidden machine readable code properly or writes not checked, and is forbidden from writing likely
Counts length, page type, opening line, links in and out, images, formatting and what the page shows about its author
Runs four separate passes to find the holes, including angles none of them took and claims none of them backed up
Writes every finding as a fraction of the pages actually read, so three out of three never gets mistaken for three out of five
Requires every recommended line of copy to be newly written, never a competitor's line with the words moved around
Stops and says so rather than calling it a pattern when fewer than three pages came back readable

Best For

Someone about to write or rebuild one page and wanting to know what the pages already ranking actually containFreelance writers and content people who do this teardown by hand for every briefSmall business owners whose page is not getting found and who want a side by side against the ones that areAnyone briefing a writer who needs an outline they can defend instead of one built on tasteAgency and in house people who produce page briefs for clients

Before you buy

This is slow hand work, not a button. You open three to five pages one at a time, and for the title, description and hidden code checks you have to run your browser's view page source command yourself, which the file says takes a few minutes per page. No paid subscription is needed anywhere, but the skill cannot tell you whether the phrase is worth writing for in the first place, it cannot read pages that block automated visitors or build themselves in the browser, and it will not write the page.
